Looking Beneath the Surface...

On Wednesday last week Jessie and Carly from the National Aquarium came to talk to us about Seaweek. We went on an undersea journey. We all had to put on flippers and wetsuits so we could 'look beneath the surface'. We saw some really interesting artefacts from under the sea and learned that as well as amazing sea creatures, sadly there is a lot of rubbish in our seas.
We are going to look at how it gets there because we all know its there because of US!
Team Tekau are starting to think about...
* What we can do to stop rubbish from spoiling the sea
* How do sea animals adapt to their environment
* How can we keep safe when we visit the beach
Carly and Jessie... and a gannet
Putting on our goggles for our underwater adventure
Yuk! This is not how we want our seas to look!

Did you know toothpaste has seaweed in it?
Fletcher has a new set of jaws - shark jaws!
This is a piece of baleen from a humpback whale.
Look at the little hairs on it.

Au Revoir, Adios, Arrivederci, Ciao...

This week we pulled out our hankies and said farewell to the 4 fabulous EIT teachers who have helped us at Mahora for the past year. Room 10 have been especially lucky as the candidate teachers planned and worked with small groups on a technology project. The activities included bird feeders, beach-themed photos frames, screen printed t-shirts and handmade sock buddies. Everyone really enjoyed the sessions so much and were sad when they came to an end. Check out this photopeach slideshow to see some great photos.
Thanks again Miss Spurrier, Miss Sinton, Mr Forman and Miss McIntyre. You guys are the BEST! Ka mau te wehi, have a great holiday and keep in touch!

Palaeontologists at Work

Wow this was exciting! Room 10 became palaeontologists and were challenged to find a rock fossil, take it back to the class laboratory and extract the fossils from it using their special tools. We found out it was much more difficult than we had anticipated. Watch the slideshow to find out more about this amazing, once in a lifetime experience.

Cape Kidnappers by Nina

I went to Cape Kidnappers 4 years ago when my big sister Amber was here from Australia.  Here are some pictures.  Every year we camp at Clifton and we can always see the Cape from our camp.  I can't wait to see the gannets again! Check out the cuties in the pink and blue t-shirts - it's Nina and Georgia!

Term 4 Wow!

Super sand trail
What the?
There were many exclamations of 'wow!' when students checked out Room 10 this morning.
The sand path through the classroom was a way to kick off our topic and to get everyone thinking.
Using the framework of 'I know', 'I think' and 'I wonder' we recorded our ideas around the sand.
Our trip in Week 4 - 7 November will be AMAZING!
Where are we going?
See if you can figure it out!
