Weaving with Mel By Jack

Yesterday Mel brought  flax to Room Ten because we are doing weaving. Reicoe and I were a team. Reicoe made the the first tipare and then it was my turn to make my tipare. Reicoe started me off then I started to get the hang of it. When I finished I asked Mel to tie the flax together. Mel said to Ezrah & I that way before the English people came to New Zealand the Maori people used flax for their clothes. I said "that must have been itchy!" but Mel said it wasn't itchy and that it was soft. I was like, what the? When I put the tipare on my head I felt like a king. It was awesome making a tipare .You are not allowed to throw flax in the bin because flax are one of New Zealand's native plants. You return the scraps of flax to the ground to break down into the soil. King George 2 made his own tipare. By Jack

  1. Like you Jack I was wondering about clothes made from flax but I suppose Maori would have treated it and let it soften before using flax for clothing. They would be very strong though! You worked really well and made a great team with Reicoe. Team work is so important!
