Grace, Sharnika and Evangelina
Lucky Grace, Sharnika and Evangelina who all came out of Monday Meet Up smiling yesterday. (Actually, we all came out smiling because we were set for a fabulous learning day, but they were even smilier because they had won something!) Evangelina won some chocolate goodies for being a responsible person in the playground and returning playground equipment. Grace and Sharnika have been busy 'Moving It' and received i-way prizes in the weekly draw. Sharnika is going to be looking good cruising around in her vest and Grace will no doubt have lots of goodies packed in her special lunchbox. Way to go! Woo-hoo!!!!

Cardboard Creativity & an Amazing Entrepreneur!

Caine created his entire arcade out of cardboard. Plus a huge dose of imagination!
Today we watched a kidschatnz twitter feed - our first time! We knew a bit about twitter and were inspired by the subject this week - Caine's Arcade.
When he was 9 years old, Caine created an elaborate cardboard arcade - it blew us away! A filmmaker discovered and made a film about it so the world could see what a kid with determination and imagination can achieve.  We thought Caine was amazing because he had a dream, he believed in himself and had the courage and determination to stick with his goals.
We learned that an entrepreneur is someone who takes a risk and starts their own business. Everyone had some ideas about how they could become entrepreneurs, just like Caine.
Here is a link to the clip...

Room 14 Kids Lead the Way

It was wonderful to have 4 fabulous teachers come and share their writing and publishing skills with us. New learning for Mrs Perry too! Thanks Breeanna, Kade, Blake and Celine (from Room 14) - ka mau te wehi! We had checked out their blog and seen some great writing and loved the way it was presented using google slides. They showed us how to do it, despite some challenges with using the iPads which differ from the Chromebooks used in the senior school. Tomorrow some will be completed and posted so check back and see how they look. What a great way to learn and share. Thanks Miss B-T for sharing your experts with us!
Celine shows Grace and Bostyn what to do
Kade talks Mathias, Sharnika, Cole and Rama through the process
Blake works with Bianca, Bona, Wyatt and Divaan
Breeanna helps Destiny-Paige, Jordan and Tyler get the hang of it

Maths at the Whiteboard Table...

We were pretty excited when Mr Pearse and some handy helpers carried a new whiteboard table into our classroom this morning. We are allowed to have a go at using it to see what we think.
It's a standing table and we just managed to find a little spot to squeeze it into. Check out how we used it today. While we were doing our Maths, Mrs Perry put a word problem on the table and those who finished early worked on solving the problem. Some got it right and some were very close. The great thing is sharing our problem solving strategies and learning from each other.  Loving the table so far!

We were thrilled last week when Cole was chosen to pick an iWay prize for 'Moving it'. He looks pretty flash in his fluoro vest too! Why is it this colour I wonder? Have you 'moved it' today??? Some 'exercisive' (thanks for the word Shekinah)  kids are already onto their 3rd iWay card. Wow!
The photographer was Nina.

SafeSparks Article

Hi I'm Bianca and I'm Mathias.
We are here to tell you about the SafeSparks programme.
On Wednesday last week a man called Bob came from Unison to talk to us about how to be safe around electricity.  After we had finished with Bob we went to Room 3 to have a chat with Anna and she talked to us about how to be safe around power boxes, power poles, substations and transformers. We learnt by watching a video. She also asked some questions that Bob had told us the answers to, so we had to think back and give HER the answers.

We learned...

* ... if you have rubber boots on, electricity can't conduct and go through the boots and give you a shock or anything. By Ana

* ... if a tree is touching a power line you're not aloud to climb the tree. By Paige

*... if there is a power pole on a car after an accident and there are people inside the car, don't touch it because the wires might be live. By Jack

*... when a bird goes on a power line it cannot get electrocuted but if it goes on a transformer it gets a shock. By Wyatt

* ... that electricity can go around the world 7 times in 1 second. By Grace

* ... never throw or kick balls at power boxes. By Tyler

*... never throw your shoes on power lines because when it's windy, the line will tear. By Rama

*... look up and check before climbing a tree because if there is a power pole close to a tree you might get electrocuted. By Jordan

*... if you get an electric shock and you are holding something you cannot let go. By Ezrah

* ... never fly a kite by a power line. Fly them at the park or on a field because there are no power lines there. By Bostyn and Leo

* ... never sit on power boxes. By Sharnika

*... you're not allowed to touch power boxes because you might get an electric shock. By Julie

*... do not throw stuff at power boxes because they might go BOOM! By Destiny

*... if something electrical happens call 0800 2 unison. By Bianca

*... if there is a bird on a power line, then it touches a transformer, it will get electrocuted. By Presley

*... birds can go on power lines and not get electrocuted. By Evangelina

*... you should look up if you want to climb a tree so you do not get electrocuted. By Aradia.

* ... linemen wear a lot of protective gear when they are working with electricity. It's so important to be safe around electricity! By Mrs Perry

Great learning Room 10!

Bob from Unison talked to us
Mmmm - Who is this mysterious person?
Great rubber safety boots!
Thanks Anna!

My New Sister Madeleine :)

On Saturday night my new little sister was born. Her name is Madeleine. She arrived at midnight on Saturday. I didn't know she was ready to come until my mum sent me a photo of her. Madeleine is so cute and she has a little bit of brown hair. My Nana and I went to the Baby Factory and bought some cute things. I bought some white mittens and a little rainbow coloured ball that has a bell inside. My Nana bought a pink baby towel and a blanket. We wrapped them up and gave them to Mum. Madeleine is at home now.

Perfection!

Super folding Room 10 - just amazing :)

Au Revoir, Adios, Arrivederci, Ciao...

This week we pulled out our hankies and said farewell to the 4 fabulous EIT teachers who have helped us at Mahora for the past year. Room 10 have been especially lucky as the candidate teachers planned and worked with small groups on a technology project. The activities included bird feeders, beach-themed photos frames, screen printed t-shirts and handmade sock buddies. Everyone really enjoyed the sessions so much and were sad when they came to an end. Check out this photopeach slideshow to see some great photos.
Thanks again Miss Spurrier, Miss Sinton, Mr Forman and Miss McIntyre. You guys are the BEST! Ka mau te wehi, have a great holiday and keep in touch!

Bostyn Feeds the Birds

Lucky birds in Bostyn's garden. They are enjoying the seeds in the bird feeder Bostyn made when she worked with Miss Sinton during Technology. I wish I had one of these in my garden. I wonder what sort of bird it is?
Bostyn designed an adorable bag to take her bird feeder home in.

Exciting Writing - 'Slice of Life'

Today we talked about everything we experienced on our fabulous trip last week to Cape Kidnappers. There was so much to think about! Room10 have been challenged to write about one slice or one bit of the trip. There were so many bits to the day...
* getting ready for the day at home
* the ride out to Clifton on the bus
* the journey along the beach on the tractor / trailers
* having lunch
* using a 'long drop' chemical toilet
* spending the day with a parent (or grandparent)
* searching for fossils
* climbing the hill to the plateaux colony
* travelling down the hill
* searching in the tidal pools for shells and sea life
* telling Mum / Dad all about it later
* lying in bed that night remembering the amazing day
WOW! so many slices to the day!

We cut up an apple with each slice representing a little bit of the day. Check out all the slices!
Slice of life means... a realistic description of life experiences.

This type of writing can also be called 'a moment in time.'

We can't wait to share our fabulous writing when we are finished!

Super Strumming - Magical Music - Ukulele Festival 2014

Bianca and Paige
Great to see an enthusiastic bunch of ukulele players at the Opera House on Friday night. It was a BIG day after the trip to Cape Kidnappers. It's such fun being part of a big ukulele orchestra. I found some of the songs a wee bit tricky. How about you? What was your favourite song? Mine was definitely 'Midnight Special' - I just love that one. Share a ukulele song that you enjoy playing - it doesn't have to be a festival song...

Hospital Buddies - Jahrel and George

Spending time in hospital is much more fun when you have a buddy to share it with! Looks like Jahrel and George are taking care of each other and experiencing new things together. Take care and we look forward to seeing you both back next week!
Yum, pudding time!
Settling into our room
Nighty night George!
Colouring fun :)
Having a rest together :)

Today Tyler announced the winner of the bunny name competition. The winner was... Grace who suggested Silvermist. Tyler said "we will call her Misty for short." Grace's prize was a huge chocolate fish. Yum!! Mel gave everyone a wine gum for helping out with choosing the name. We loved this competition. Thanks Mel and Tyler! We hope hope Misty learns to answer to her new name quickly.  Let us know how she likes it. :)
Delicious!

Oh Brother, I Won't Do This Again! By Mathias

Today is school photo day. I must look my best. The minute I wake up, things start going wrong...

"Wake up" said Dad. I climb out of bed. On the very top rung of my ladder, I slip and... CRASH!!! I had crashed through the floor! "Where am I?" I said to myself. I had concussion!
Oh brother, I won't do this again!

The concussion eventually wore off. Breakfast time. I got out some Weet-Bix. I reached for the milk but I picked up the water and instead of grabbing the sugar I grabbed the xylitol. I poured the water over the Weet-Bix and sprinkled the xylitol over it. Time to eat. I ate a piece of Weet-Bix. "PFFFFFT, YUCK!!!" I screamed. "MUM!" "What?" she asked. "Where's the milk and sugar?" "We've run out she replied. "You'll have to go with water and Xylitol." I ate the rest of my Weet-Bix.
Oh brother, I won't do this again!

When I finished my breakfast, I bumped my nose on the bottom of the bowl. The pain was terrible. "YOOOOW!!" I screamed. "MUM!!" "What now?" she asked. "I've got a bleeding nose! I can't be like this for the school photos!" She comes in. "Goodness me!" she says. "It's bleeding hard out! How did you do it?" "I bumped it on the bottom of my bowl!" I screamed. "Get a damp flannel and put it under your nose" she said.
Oh brother, I won't do this again!

My nose stopped bleeding later. I go into the bathroom to brush my teeth. I picked up a toothpaste tube tube but it was melted ice cream! As I put the tooth brush in my mouth, the ice cream fell off. "PFFFFFT, YUCK!!!" I screamed. There was none of my toothpaste left so I had to use my brother's toothpaste.
Oh brother, I won't do this again!

I'm at school before my photo. I'm at the top. I start to sniffle, then I become unconscious. I faint one second before the photo is taken. Half a second after the photo is taken, everybody hears  a loud CRASH! and everybody sees me, fainted behind the photo thing.
Oh brother, I won't do this again!

When I wake up again, I realise I am in hospital. The doctor comes in and says "You're good to go." Five minutes later I'm back in my own house. Everything was back to normal!
What a relief!
Mathias
