Punctuation Day!

Today is Punctuation Day in the USA. I know we're not in the USA but we could all brush up on our punctuation skills. Right? Here are some links to a few activities to help you. Listen to the song (yes it's American) and have a go at one of the games. Don't panic, they're fun!

Punctuation! is very. Import ant soyour writing? and The (message) You, want to get across? ...can be clearly under stood.

That sentence shows why it's so important to write things clearly, with the correct punctuation marks.

Ahoy there me hearties! Arrhh!

September 19th was International Talk Like a Pirate Day.
Room 10 had some pirate fun and there were a few rogue characters loose in the classroom as well. Read about some of the highlights...

On Friday I was One-eyed Eddie the Talkative. We had a teacher called Captain Mean Matthews. We played Pirates and the Gold, which is like Dog and the Bone but with pirates and gold. Instead of having Jelly Bean Moments, we had Skull and Crossbone Moments. By Mathias

On Friday I was Scrawny Gertrude the Dangerous. I really enjoyed making the pirate hats and the pirate treasure maps. By Nina

I was Sneaky Thomas the Dangerous on pirate day. We did an activity called Pirate and the Gold. By Rama

I was Marooned Tabitha the Smelly. We did a work sheet and we had to write it using four pirate names. We had to say what jobs they did that they were useless at. I wrote...
There's Pirate Koo-koo, who steers the ship's wheel with his leg and Pirate Lucy who digs for Juicies.
By Sharnika

Arrhh! my hearties!  My pirate name was Pirate Death Danger. We made a pirate hat. Mine was the best! By Reicoe

Just as well Scrawny Tabitha added her commas, she won't be walking the plank this time!
I be off to find the treasure!

Loving Libby's Looms!

Libby is a 10 year old Hastings girl who makes very cute things with Loom Bands. She has her own youtube site with quite a few tutorials. This clever girl makes a little bit of money for every view she gets. What a great idea! When you visit her page, leave her a comment and click subscribe as well. This would be a super activity for the holidays. Maybe you could even set up your own tutorials with original creations! Check her out at...

Similes and Metaphors

Great language features add pizzazz to your writing! Check it out...

Still Colouring Our Worlds!

Look at these super 'Colour My World' presentations completed with Miss Pierson yesterday. We have been learning what similes are and writing examples so that we can use some in our writing. Some of these presentation use similes. Similes are when two things are compared using the words 'like' or 'as'.
Why do writers use similes?
Writers use similes to explain things, to express emotion, and to make their writing more vivid and entertaining. Discovering fresh similes to use in your own writing also means discovering new ways to look at things you are writing about. Similes make stories fun and interesting to read.
Check out these great presentations...
Challenge: Comment and share a super simile of your own!

My Big Win! By Ezrah

WOW! Yesterday in the hall we had a whole school meet up. We had a little talk about production. Then Mrs Pearse announced something really exciting! It was the 'Colour My World' cover   competition. My heart was pounding! Then they announced the winners for the year 1, 2 and 3's. Mrs Pearse said... Ezrah Eagle! I stood up and went down to get my voucher and shake Mrs Pearse's hand.  $20 to spend at the Warehouse! What will I get...
Yes! I've got it!

This is such an amazing young lady. Imagine what we could all achieve if we just followed our hearts and dreams and never said "I can't." She believed she could do anything and she did. WOW!

Surgical Success

George is recovering well following surgery last night to mend his exposed spinal column. Dr Milo used a large needle and embroidery thread to close the gaping wound in his back. Anaesthetist Dr Cocoa assisted and said "Everything went as planned and it took about 15 mins to complete the stitches." George was resting comfortably with a banana and looking forward to being back in Room 10 soon.

A large needle and embroidery thread do the trick!
George's heart rate and blood pressure are monitored in the recovery area

My Favourite Number by Tyler

My favourite number is one
It is like a pogo stick
It is shaped like a flagpole
It makes me think of soldiers
It makes me feel happy!

My Favourite Number 8 by Bianca

8 is my Favourite number
Because it is shaped like two jellybeans joined together.
It's also like one big snake.
It looks like two running tracks.
It tastes like two boysenberries in my tummy.
8 is like a double cake.
It makes me feel happy!

Number One By Wyatt

My favourite number is one
It is shaped like a tree with a branch on top
It makes me think of my baby brother Awaniwianagi asleep
It makes me feel like a winner... Number One!
It makes me remember my Grandad in heaven looking down at me smiling.

My Favourite Number By Mathias

One is my favourite number. It is like a vacuum cleaner. It is shaped like a tree with a twig hanging off it. It makes me feel worried that I will be sucked up into it. It makes me think of a mop mopping by itself.

Welcoming Leo

Hi! :)  I'm Leo and I'm new in Room 10. I already have a couple of friends. I feel really welcome in Room 10 and my friends names are Tyler, Jordan, Ezrah and Cole. Yesterday I got my first piece of bling on my peg so I felt so proud of myself. My favourite thing is watching people on the i pads.  I want to have a go but I don't know what to do. People are so nice to me in Room 10. I think Room 10 is the bomb!
Thank you Paige and Ezrah for helping me with this post.

Over 20,000 Views - Woo-hoo!

This afternoon we had a special treat to celebrate reaching 20,000 page views on our blog. The cake was beautiful and tasted deeeeelicious! Our blog really is a reflection of what is happening in Room 10 and features daily happenings and examples of student's work. Every morning after we take the roll and check out the Mahora Daily Notices on-line, we look at comments waiting to be moderated and publish those that reflect the 'language of success'. I have noticed how carefully students choose their words and add correct punctuation while challenging and questioning posts. The number of views is great, but the dialogue the blog creates and how it provides an authentic purpose for writing is really exciting. Thanks to everyone who views and comments - we really enjoy our daily blog time!
PS George is scheduled to have surgery tomorrow and if all goes well he should be back at school on Friday. Fingers crossed!
