Farewell Mrs Bell

Mrs Bell returned today for a special farewell assembly. She was given some beautiful gifts including a special canvas featuring the fingerprints of former students and Kapa Haka kids. It was her favourite colour - purple! Thanks Destiny, Paige, Lyrik and Breezanna for presenting this special gift to her. Piki Haere Mrs Bell!

Sharing Learning with Popplet

We are learning to…
Work with a buddy and use an iPad app called Popplet to share what we learned at RJ Flowers this week. Popplet is a great app for brainstorming and sharing ideas. These are fabulous Popplets Room 10. I know you worked really hard on editing and completing them today! Tino pai :)

Great day at RJ Flowers

What a super learning experience it was visiting RJ Flowers this morning. We saw apple and kiwifruit orchards and got to visit the pack house and cool store. We learned so many things and saw workers doing all sorts of different jobs. It was a very busy place! Wendy, John and George showed us around and told us what happens to the fruit they grow. We even got to pick and eat a scrumptious fuji apple. Delicious! Thanks for a super learning day Evans family! :)

Becoming Super Spelling Whizzes!

As part of our Daily 5 one of our activities is Word Work. I was really impressed with how focussed Room 10 was while working on their spelling today. Spelling is such an important life skill and knowing how to write the essential words quickly will help you become a better writer.
Look how busy students were today! Very exciting…
We talked about ways to practise at home and suggested using scrabble tiles to make your focus words.
It was really exciting to get this photo emailed to me tonight showing what Tyler did. That's really cool learning - great job Tyler! Thanks for sharing :)
Spelling with Scrabble tiles - Fantastic idea!

Tyler - Kea of the Week!

Last night at Keas we had a challenge activity. I was scared at first but I gave the rope course a go. You had to go through a tunnel first. Then you have to walk a tightrope. Then you had to scuffle through another tunnel to the finish. After that we played  a game called rhubarb. The other Keas have to ask you a question and you have to answer rhubarb but you're not allowed to laugh or smile. I felt excited when I won the trophy. I have fun playing with my friend Eddie at Keas.

New Writing Workbooks!

Today Room 10 got cool new Writing Workbooks. We will be using these books when we do 'Work on Writing' as part of our Daily 5.

Fruit or Vegetable?

We wondered…
What is a fruit and what is a vegetable?
We checked the dictionary definition and looked at the characteristics of some fruits and veges. We cut some up and had a good look inside them. We found out that most fruits are vegetables but not all vegetables are fruit!
Check out these super Topic books and some Pic Collages created on the iPads …

Nearly Last Swim...

The water in the school pool is pretty chilly now - about 12 - 15 degrees, so Friday might be our last swim until next spring.
What has been your favourite part of swimming?
What Piki Haere goals have you achieved?
What would you like to get better at?
Add your comments!

Assembly Item from Room 10 Stars!

We presented an item at assembly on Friday. Our item was about how we are working towards becoming confident, independent readers. We shared how to choose a good fit book and what successful, independent reading looks like in our classroom. Our teacher was so proud of our presentation - she said we were all her favourites and gave everyone a Cadbury's Favourite. YUM!
Mathias and Shekinah were the announcers for our item

Our T-Ball Game By Mathias

Yesterday our t-ball game was great. Parkvale won with 28 runs. Team Smith got 25 runs. It was so close! We showed friendliness by saying 'good game' after the game. It was our best game so far so Ms Smith was really proud of us.

Ms Smith & Ms T's awesome T-Ball team.
Mathias is sitting in the centre,  front row with a great big smile!

Real Buried Treaure

Ancient Coins
Imagine walking along and stumbling over some ancient treasure… That's exactly what happened to John and Mary from California who unearthed intact cans of coins worth $10 million US dollars.
Today we read an article on Kiwi Kids News with the headline 'Couple Finds Buried Treasure'.
Check it out online…  http://www.kiwikidsnews.co.nz/couple-finds-buried-treasure

Senior Swimming Sports

What a super day we had at the Senior Swimming Sports yesterday! Congratulations to all the Year 4, 5 and 6 students who showed the Mahora value of COURAGE by entering 3 or more events. Tino pai to the Room 10 and 11 Year 3 kids who showed FRIENDLINESS by cheering and supporting as spectators - you will get your turn next year! Not everyone earned a place getter paddle by coming 1st, 2nd or 3rd but it was so super to see you give it your best. Be proud! It would be great to read your comments about the day. I challenge you to add a comment… What did you enjoy? Which event was your favourite and why? What are you looking forward to entering next year? How did you feel on the day?

Good Fit Book Boxes...

We are learning how to choose 'good fit' books. Just like shoes, books need to be the right fit. Mrs Perry bought some of her shoes to school to show us that just as shoes have different purposes so do books. We might choose a book about fishing if that interests us or a book of jokes to read for fun. We are learning that we need to understand the books we read and know most of the words so that we enjoy them and have fun reading. Nina and Mrs Perry swapped shoes but they couldn't walk in each others shoes for long as they were not the right fit.
Everyone in Room 10 is setting up their own reading box with books that are a good fit. We know this will help us become more fluent, confident, accurate readers and that we will have fun reading.
Good fit books are just as important as good fit shoes!

Aiden's Last Day

Sadly Friday was Aiden's last day in Room 10 as his family are moving to Palmerston North. We had a BIG group hug and wish him all the best at his new school. Aiden was a bit of a 'bling king' and his peg was nearly full! We'll certainly miss his smiling face.
